Coffee Stain Studios AB is a video game developer and publisher based in Skövde, Sweden.

History

Coffee Stain Studios - Game Jam 2018 - Sometimes we just need a break from what we're doing. So we decided to have a 3 day game jam! And Jace captured and edited it all for your viewing pleasure.

The company was founded in 2010 by students of the University of Skövde to develop video games. On 16 December 2010, their first title, I Love Strawberries, was released for iOS through the App Store by Atari, Inc.

Their second game, Sanctum was initially developed as a modification for Unreal Tournament 3. Coffee Stain entered the "Make Something Unreal" competition held by Epic Games in 2009, and were awarded with multiple honors. On 23 March 2011, the company signed a five-year agreement with Epic Games to develop games using Unreal Engine, releasing Sanctum on 15 April 2011, and later released its sequel Sanctum 2 in 2013.

Coffee Stain Studios gained a significant deal of recognizition on its release of Goat Simulator in 2014; developed from part of an internal game jam following Sanctum 2 to toy around with physics engines within the Unreal engine, Goat Simulator became a full product where players attempt to create as much havoc as possible in a given setting as a goat. While the title received mixed critical reviews, as it was released in a purposely buggy state to take advantage of the ragdoll physics, it became highly successful through Let's Play videos and streamers; by 2016, Coffee Stain Studios reported that Goat Simulator has brought in $12 million in revenue, outperforming all sales of the studio's previous titles.

In February 2017, the studio announced that they will also now help serve as a video game publisher, building on their own experiences of having trouble finding publishers for smaller projects as well as having the financing to support such efforts due to the success of Goat Simulator. Their first title as a publisher will be Huntdown from the Swedish studio Easy Trigger.

Coffee Stain Studios announced in January 2018 that it has acquired Gone North Games, another Swedish developer that had worked with Coffee Stain on several games. Gone North Games was rebranded Coffee Stain North.
